How To Prepare For Winter Storms
23rd Nov 2013
Now that winter is fast approaching, a person needs to be prepared for serious winter storms that may knock out power. While a space heater can provide extra comfort when you have electricity, once that is gone it will do little to help. Therefore it is best to pack up supplies and have them ready in case of emergency.
First, set aside the things you will need in case you are stuck in your home for a few days. These include things like bottled water, blankets, extra winter clothing, sleeping bags, dry food, a first aid kit, flashlights, candles, a battery operated radio, and a small stove (not one that burns charcoal which produces carbon monoxide). This way, if the snow is too much to leave to leave your home, you should have enough supplies for you and your family for at least three or four days. A portable phone charger can also be helpful to ensure you have a way or reaching the outside world if the phone lines are down.
If you are stuck in your home, assume you will be there for a while. This means leaving the refrigerator closed, conserving as much energy as possible by not exerting yourself, and having simple games like cards or a board game to help pass the time. This can make the wait bearable instead of just sitting around for days with nothing to do.
You should also have tools ready in case the winter storms don’t subside and you are forced to leave your home. This should include a shovel, warm water resistant clothing, and a hat or face guard to protect against the wind and snow. If you become desperate and must leave the home to seek help, these will give you the best chance of making it into town instead of remaining stranded.
By checking on these supplies before winter comes, making sure they are in good working condition, you can be sure to safely get through any winter storms that may hit your area.
